IHC Art Awards ignite creative sparks in community

Logan, who comes from Maketu, is a passionate artist and art appreciator. He has loved visiting galleries and painting his own creations for many years. He has painted pet portraits, including one for his son’s girlfriend of her dog, and more recently has embraced creating cultural works.

Logan first heard about the IHC Art Awards in 2023, and was motivated both by the challenge and the prestige of the event. First presented in 2004, the Art Awards have since become a major annual event, celebrating the talent and achievements of artists with an intellectual disability, or intellectual disability and autism.

A life-long artist, Logan spends much of his time in the garage of his home, where he has set up his art studio. For his first entry in the IHC Art Awards in 2023, Logan chose to paint a scene from his hometown, creating an acrylic on canvas titled “The Newdicks Beach Scene.”

Logan’s entry was not shortlisted that year, but he is now gearing up again with renewed enthusiasm for the Art Awards in 2025. This time, having researched his whakapapa in recent years, he has completed a new canvas portraying his great-great-grandmother.

Open to artists across New Zealand, the Art Awards provide a platform to showcase artists’ creativity, gain recognition, have their voices heard and sell their work. It’s a chance for new and experienced artists alike to share their work with the public, and be part of a nationwide celebration of art.

Logan, we applaud your commitment and artistry, and wish you the very best of luck in this year’s awards.
