For Brian and Lucy, two people supported by NZCL, embarking on a fishing expedition had been a lifelong ambition. Now, with the support of the NZCL Midlands Team, this dream has become a reality.
Brian, a seasoned hunter and fisher, and Lucy, who had never been on a fishing trip before, had long dreamed of a day out on the water. They registered with Wish 4 Fish, a charity that offers free fishing trips, but the long waitlist led Team Leader Ivy Ritchie from Totara to explore other options.
She discovered Coromandel Fishing Charters, run by Lorraine and Tom, who are passionate about helping disabled people enjoy fishing.

Ivy meticulously organised the trip, ensuring every detail was perfect.
The boat, equipped with a ramp, made boarding easy for everyone. The calm waters and the well-prepared boat set the stage for a fantastic day. Brian, thrilled to be back on the water, and Lucy, eager for her first fishing adventure, were joined by David and Graeme.
Also on board from the NZCL Team were Support Workers Rino, Shivam, and Gurveer, Service Delivery Managers Reuben Rawhiti-Newton and Kimberley De Lacey, along with Health Advisor Sarah Scott.
The crew’s support was outstanding, especially with the ramp challenges. The day was filled with laughter and excitement as they caught fish, creating lasting memories. Brian, who cooked a delicious lunch from their catch, was overjoyed to share his love for fishing with everyone. Lucy, who gained confidence from the experience, expressed her desire to go fishing again.

The trip was more than just a day out; it was a chance for people from different services to connect and enjoy a shared passion. Brian, already planning his next trip, dreams of staying in a motel to enjoy early morning fishing, making even more memories.
