Kanwal Singh has had an incredible employment journey with NZCL.
Kanwal arrived in Aotearoa New Zealand in early 2020, just before the world was gripped by the COVID-19 pandemic. He came with dreams of pursuing higher education and enrolled in a Level 5 Diploma in Business Management. However, as the pandemic unfolded, Kanwal found himself reflecting on his true passions and decided to change his career path. Driven by a desire to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives, he enrolled in a Level 7 program in Community Healthcare and Services.
In October 2022, Kanwal joined NZCL Midlands regional team as a Support Worker. His dedication and passion quickly made him a valuable member of the team. By August 2023, his hard work, dedication and natural leadership qualities were recognised, and he was appointed into a Team Leader role. However, the turning point in Kanwal’s career came in April 2024 when he was offered the role of Acting Service Delivery Manager. This opportunity allowed him to showcase his skills in a leadership position. From February 2025, he has been working as a part-time Acting Service Manager and a part-time Community Connector. Kanwal continues to thrive in both roles, making a positive difference in NZCL and leading by example.
Kanwal is deeply appreciative of NZCL for providing him with opportunities to grow and develop within his career. He is especially thankful to his Regional Manager and the Service Delivery team for their unwavering support and encouragement. Their belief in his potential has been instrumental in his professional growth and career progression.
Kanwal says, “Every step of my journey with NZCL has been a testament to the power of purpose, perseverance, and people who believe in you. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given and the unwavering support from my team. Together, we’re not just working—we’re making a difference.”
In July this year, Kanwal was one of four finalists for New Zealand Health Group Health and Safety Award. The award celebrates team members who keep us safe and healthy through their efforts to improve the way we work and manage risks and hazards around us. This level of recognition in such a large organisation is a major accomplishment, demonstrating extraordinary levels of respect and appreciation from colleagues, management and the executive team.
Kanwal’s journey is a great reminder of how resilience, flexibility, and a supportive environment can help someone truly shine. Let’s continue to support and encourage one another as we strive for excellence in our respective roles.
